The Longest Road Trip Possible

Road trip lovers will be happy to know that it's possible to take a lifelong road trip. Take it from one very adventurous Swiss couple who has made a life out of their road tripping and recently set the Guinness World Record for the Longest Drive Journey. Emil and Liliana Schmid successfully completed the longest driven journey - 460,476 miles! - in April of 2017. In 1984, the pair began traveling via a Toyota Land Cruiser in Iceland, and has since traveled across 180 countries. (In case you're wondering, their Land Cruiser's still in action!) The best part? This awesome couple doesn't plan to stop truckin;

Long-Distance Road Trips in the U.S.

American travelers looking for a way to see as much open road as possible are in luck. They have the distinct advantage of being able to travel for over a full week (at eight hours driving time per day) without so much as crossing a border. Here are some of the longest American road trips you can actually take.

  • Miami to Anchorage (79 hours) - On this nearly 80-hour trip, travelers traverse through Canada (okay, you have to cross a border or two for this one), only to wind up back in the U.S. Interestingly, this expedition not only takes you through five different time zones, but also through two polar opposite climates.
  • Boston to Salem, Oregon(47 hours) -This popular road trip is the all-American granddaddy: spanning across the northern U.S. via 1-90 and 1-80 (or the more scenic U.S. Route 20), travelers have the opportunity to pass through hundreds of fascinating areas, from farmland to Yellowstone to urban hotspots.

  • Portland, Maine to Los Angeles (45 hours) -Taking the diagonal approach from the Northeast to the Southwest, committed road trippers can pass through Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, Omaha, Denver and Las Vegas before reaching their destination in Southern California.
