Study name: Blood lactate disappearance during breathing hyperoxic gas after exercise in two different physical fitness groups-on the work load fixed at 70% VO2max
Gender/sex and ability: 14 male participants
Type of exercise used: Two groups, anaerobic threshold (AT) and lower AT group on a bicycle ergometer
Intensity of exercise: Three sessions; each consisting of five minutes of exercise and six minutes of rest at a workload of 70% VO2max
Percent (%) of oxygen used: Hyperoxic gas was breathed only during recovery periods. Oxygen percentages included 21%, 30%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%.
Research/study findings: Blood lactate values were significantly affected by factors of group (p<0.01), oxygen concentration (p<0.05), session (p<0.01) and time (p<0.01). This confirms the effects of hyperoxia exist after exercise. Hyperoxic effects on blood lactate disappearance was obvious over 60% (p<0.05) from recovery two by 7.86%; 80% FiO2 decreased 11.77% lactate and 100% decreased 9.23% lactate and was also significant (p<0.01) in high aerobic threshold groups. Higher aerobic threshold exercise promotes increased accelerations when compared to lower AT exercise sessions.
Oxygen Plus application/implication: The use of hyperoxia significantly decreases blood lactate, increases oxygen concentration within the bloodstream and speeds up completion time of moderate exercise similar to the one in the study. The aerobic potential gained during moderate exercise in this study suggests supplementing with pure recreational oxygen, like Oxygen Plus, will enhance athletic performance.
